 BASED ON KIMBERLY
A circus company.

Company ethos:

Our desire is to uncompromisingly and unpretentiously commit to our vision of what circus can be, and make things happen!

Using the resources we have and whatever artistic medium best serves our vision, we create from a punk, playful, and politically left playground. Fueled by love, we frequently incorporate topics of feminism, freedom of speech, friendship, community, sexuality, and gender roles.

We approach our work with a clown mentality, with a love for stupidity and tragedy.

With a specific focus on those who identify as female, we aim to create an open atmosphere for artistic processes and experiments to grow and find their tangible place in the world. For us Kimberly creates a platform to protest, question beliefs and continue growing, as people and as artists.

We work with:
  • Individuals who believe the world would benefit from being more empathic, diverse and tolerant.
  • Beings who are passionate about countercultures and question the system.
  • Folk who are interested in laughable, confusing and emerging aesthetics.
  • Humans who are nice...

How we work:
  • We give as much importance to all areas of artistry within our work, scenography, costumes, visual and audio landscape, graphic design etc. Circus is part of the bigger artistic picture.
  • We aim to work sustainably with each other, with our precious natural environment and economically.
  • We take a project based approach which creates across mediums; circus shows, short films, visual art books, interactive QA discussions, live art!
  • We commit to ideas whilst they are fresh and exciting and follow the natural changing tide of them.
  • We work with a growth mentality, staying playful, curious and open.
  • We wish to stay away from the highbrow art culture and keep our work accessible and grounded.
Our plan isn't to be the next big thing, it’s to work in a way which is authentic to our process and gives a platform for ourselves and others to have a fulfilling career that creates uncompromising work which we feel is relevant to the current time.

We are a nomadic company
Kimberly has Finnish, German, English and Swedish connections because that is just the nature of the circus lifestyle. And the dream is as real as it is challenging! ;)

My name is Imogen, she, her. I’m English, lived in Sweden for a nice cold chunk of my life, studied at Stockholm University of the Arts, I’ve a BA in circus and I am deep in the rabbit hole, a strange life pursuit some say. I shoot, develop and print analog photos, its been my passion for over 10 year. I have a complicated and ongoing love story with Berlin. It’s home, but life usually passes elsewhere. Nomadic life, tour life, circus life.. Living the circus dream is as ironic as it is accurate. I’ve travelled to over 35 countries with my work, mixing visual art, theatre, dance, live art, and clowning with my circus practice. Like anyone who’s passionate about their profession, it’s become an obsession.. the community, acceptance and the freedom to work all them creative and physical muscles, it's a total privilege! I believe in independent creation, staying away from capitalist commercialism that sucks the soul from art. It's a lot of work to do things differently, but it's the only way. I love to create with Inka, it makes me feel alive!

I am Inka, she/her. I was born and raised in Finland, a country that knows a thing or two about snow and silence! I took my first steps into the circus world at age 10, and that path has led me all over Europe—and, so far, to a life in Berlin. I studied at Lahti Professional Circus Education, graduating with a Washington trapeze and handstand focus, though my practice mixes in a bit of Finnish folk music and the occasional Kantele tune too. I co-founded Sisus and Based on Kimberly with friends who share that sense of adventure, and together we’ve built a creative life that’s both independent and unconventional. With my work, I've been lucky enough to perform for audiences in over 20 countries. Working alongside people like Imogen inspires me to push boundaries, question stereotypes, and use our work to make circus a space where everyone can feel seen and celebrated.
